When ESV Ingolstadt and MTV Ingolstadt combined in 2004, FC Ingolstadt 04 was established. During their first campaign, the club competed in the Bayernliga, which served as the 4th division at that time. They narrowly fell short of advancing to the next level, ending in second place—just a single point adrift of champions SpVgg Bayreuth.
