In 2004, ESV Ingolstadt and MTV Ingolstadt combined to establish FC Ingolstadt 04. During their first year of competition, the club competed in the Bayernliga, which ranked as the 4th tier, and narrowly fell short of advancing to the next level by a single point after finishing second, with SpVgg Bayreuth claiming the top spot.
