When ESV Ingolstadt and MTV Ingolstadt combined in 2004, FC Ingolstadt 04 came into existence. During their first year, the club competed in the Bayernliga, which was then the 4th tier of German football. They narrowly fell short of advancing to a higher division, coming in second place just a single point behind champions SpVgg Bayreuth.
