The Netherlands, who finished as runners-up in both the 1974 and 1978 World Cups (losing to Belgium and France respectively), made a surprising absence from the 1982 World Cup held in Spain after failing to qualify. Had they participated, their planned Adidas kits for the competition would have showcased an elegant striped pattern and remained in use by the national team throughout that era.
