The goalkeeper protected Real Sociedad's nets, as well as those of R. C. D. Español and F. C. Barcelona. With Spain's national side, he featured in three consecutive World Cups. During the 1983/84 campaign, he received the Zamora award. In the final match of the 1984/85 League season, played at Valladolid's José Zorrilla stadium, Urruti turned into a legend when he stopped a spot kick that secured F. C. Barcelona's League title. From that moment forward, the phrase "Urriti t'estimo" became immortalized.
